Celebrity chef, Matt Tebbutt swapped his chef’s hat for a hard hat when he visited his former school, Rougemont, on Wednesday 3 May to see the progress of the School’s new build development. Matt who currently presents ‘Saturday Kitchen’ on BBC1 and is a former pupil, was joined on the visit by his father, Mr Martin Tebbutt a School Governor, his son, Henry who is currently a pupil in the Senior School, along with representatives from the School plus White Bros & Speed, the local contractors hired to bring the build to life.
With the £3.5 million build set to house a brand new refectory, a 600 seater auditorium and Sixth Form Centre, the project marks an exciting development in the School’s history.
Located on 55 acres of grounds just outside Newport, Chamber member Rougemont is an independent co-educational school and is home to around 550 pupils aged 3 – 18 years old. Categorised as ‘Excellent’ in a recent Estyn inspection, the new facilities which are being constructed by local company, White Bros & Speed, will be valuable addition to not only the school, but also local businesses and the surrounding community as the centre will be available to hire out of school hours.
“It’s great to return to Rougemont to see this new venture,” said Matt. “The new building will offer the children great opportunities, and as a chef, I of course welcome the new catering facilities to the school.”
Originally located on Clevedon Road, Rougemont School has been a part of Newport’s history since the 1920’s, moving from Clevedon Road to Stow Hill and then to the current location on Malpas Road in 1992.
“Exciting times are ahead for the school with this new stage of expansion,” commented Mr Robert Carnevale, Headmaster at the school since 2014. “The build is due for completion in summer 2018 and a great deal of work is going into the design of the interior so that we can provide a new academic environment that benefits all our pupils. As well as the dedicated Sixth Form Centre, the auditorium and learning facilities will allow us to provide new and enhanced experiences to all our children.”
Mr Andrew Knight, Director of Business & Finance at Rougemont School, added: “Whilst the facility will offer fantastic opportunities for our pupils, it will also offer a superb venue for community use, with the school planning to have the facilities available for community use and private lettings during evenings, weekends and school holidays.” The new build has been designed by Richard Green Associates.
